Summary of Case:

"Lynette Karenyi was wrongly convicted on May 13, 2013 of organising and holding a public meeting in Zimunda Village, Zimbabwe in 2013 that wasn't sanctioned by the local police. After Karenyi was convicted by Magistrate Sekesai Chiundura, she was sentenved to 4 months in jail or a $200 fine, and 3 months in jail suspended for 5 years of good behavior. Karenyi appealed, arguing that "Magistrate Chiundura erred in not considering Karenyi’s defence or explanation that she was not the convenor of the meeting and that she had relied on the evidence of state witnesses in convicting the former MDC-T legislator and dismissed the evidence of defence witnesses." On May 29, 2014 Zimbabwe's High Court overturned Karenyi's conviction and acquitted her based on the prosecution's failure to present sufficient evidence she violated Public Order and Security Act Chapter 11:17. Karenyi was represented during her appeal by David Tandiri of Tandiri Law Chambers and Blessing Nyamaropa of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR)."
