Summary of Case: |
"Tzionis Karipides was wrongly convicted on January 19, 2007 of being in possession of stolen goods based on the testimony of a policeman. Cyprus' Supreme Court quashed Karipides' conviction in June 2007 based on the fact that there was only a suspicion of his guilt. Some of the allegedly stolen items in his possession were proven to have not been stolen, and there was no proof that any of the other items had been stolen. The three-judge panel ruled, "Taking into account what was conducted in the trial, the court appeared to state that because the investigators had reasonable suspicion then it was feasible to assume that a crime had indeed been committed."" |
