Summary of Case:

"Ahmad Kassim was wrongly convicted in 1958 of first-degree manslaughter in Erie County, New York based on his confession. Kassim was unfamiliar with the English language, and his "supposed" confession was not only false, but was actually the words of the District Attorney. Kassim was released in 1966 after a new trial was ordered and his indictment was dismissed based on his unreliable confession and the fact another man had confessed to the crime. In 1984 the New York Legislature based a bill that enabled Kassim to sue the State. Kassim filed a lawsuit and in 1986 the State of New York awarded $501,653 for loss of his civil rights, humiliation, mental anguish, and lost earnings."
