"Clyde Kennard was wrongly convicted in 1959 of reckless driving and unlawful possession of intoxicating liquor in Forrest County, Mississippi, Kennard was sentence to pay a fine of $600. The Mississippi Supreme Court overturned Kennard's conviction in March 1961. Kennard was prosecuted as a warning to stop trying to enter the segregated Mississippi Southern College (now the University of Southern Mississippi). He ignored the warning and so was prosecuted in 1960 of trumped up burglary charges, for which he was sentenced to seven years in prison at hard labor." |
