Summary of Case:

"Shirley Kinge was wrongly convicted in 1990 of burglary, arson and hindering prosecution related to the 1989 murders of four people (a mother, father and their two children) in Brooklyn, New York. Authorities contended she helped her son cover-up the slayings. Her son was shot to death during a police shoot-out in February 1990. She was sentenced in February 1991 to 18 to 47 years in prison. Her convictions were overturned in September 1992 when it was discovered that the state police planted her fingerprint on a gasoline can found at the crime scene. She was released after two years imprisonment. In February 2008 a New York State Court of Claims judge ruled that Shirley Kinge was entitled to compensation because she was the victim of malicious prosecution and negligent supervision of the state police investigator who planted phony evidence linking her to the deaths of Warren and Dolores Harris and their two children in December 1989. A hearing began in Syracuse, NY on March 2, 2009 to determine her compensation. On June 23, 2009 the New York State Court of Claims awarded Kinge $250,000. She also settled a federal civil rights lawsuit against New York City for $3.1 million in 2008. Kinge was 80 when she died in 2015."
