"Vasiliy Kononov was wrongly convicted in April 2004 of committing a war crime on May 27, 1944 when he and other Russian partisans burned homes in which arms supplied by the Germans were found. Nine people -- six men and three women -- were killed during the raid. the 81 year-old Vasilily Knononov was sentenced to 20 months imprisonment. He appealed, and on July On July 24, 2008 the European Court of Human Rights overturned Kononov's conviction on the basis that at the time his action wasn't considered a crime under the prevailing international law, and so he had no basis to believe he was doing anything criminal. The Court also awarded Kononov damages of 30,000 euros ($47,010)."
