Summary of Case:

"Oscar Krueger was wrongly convicted of mailing a "lewd, lascivious, obscene letter" to a woman in New York. On February 2, 1911 Krueger was convicted on the basis of circumstantial evidence and a handwriting expert who testified that Krueger's handwriting matched that of the letter writer. Oscar Krueger was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison. Krueger protested his innocence and wrote many letters while imprisoned. He was advised to submit a pardon application to the president. Krueger's third application was forwarded to the U.S. Attorney in New York, who took an interest in the case and had Krueger's handwriting expertly comparted with that of the letter's writer. When the analysis was negative, the case was reinvestigated. On the investigation's conclusion that Krueger did not write the letter, the U.S. Attorney recommended that Krueger be pardoned. On January 18, 1912 Krueger was granted a full pardon by President William Taft. Krueger was wrongly imprisoned for about one year."
