Summary of Case:

"Chiang Kuo-ching was wrongly convicted in 1997 of the rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl in Taipei city, Taiwan in September 1996. Kuo-ching was one of three suspects arrested after the crime and he was the only who allegedly failed a polygraph test. The police then embarked on an intense interrogation of him that lasted for 37 straight hours and included physically beating him. Kuo-ching confessed and although he retracted it immediately as coerced and that he only did so to stop the interrogation and beatings, his confession was the key evidence relied on by the military court to convict him. Kuo-ching was sentenced to death and excuted in 1997. Kuo-ching was posthumously acquitted on September 13, 2011 after a three-month retrial by a panel of three military judges. It was announced on October 27, 2011 that his family would be paid compensation of US$4.39 million (NT$131 million). US$52,600 (NT$1.57 million) of the money is compensation for his 314 days he spent in detention, and the rest is compensation for his wrongful execution. Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou apologized to Kuo-ching's family in person. (All amounts at the exchange rate on October 28, 2011)"
