Summary of Case:

"Henry Landini was wrongly convicted of possessing heroin found in the trunk of his car in 1980. Convicted in 1982 based on the testimony of the police officers that found the heroin, it was discovered in 1997 that the police had planted the heroin in his car. In 2001 the New South Wales Court of Appeals quashed his conviction based on the police planting of the evidence against Henry Landini. In March 2006 Henry Landini filed a complaint seeking $1 million in damages from the state of New South Wales, the Australian Federal Police and individual police officers. In December 2008 Landini was awarded AUS$230,000 by a NSW Supreme Court judge based the manufacturing or fabrication of the evidence against Landini that resulted in him being wrongly arrested and charged. Landini award was broken down in the following way: $30,000 for mental anguish at being wrongly accused, $35,000 for loss of liberty, $160,000 exemplary damages for the conduct of police and $5000 for legal costs. The award amounted to US$162,237 at the exchange rate on December 17, 2008. (1 AUD = 0.705768 USD on December 17, 2008)"
