Summary of Case:

"Roger Lee Largent was wrongly convicted in 2016 of raping M.F., a woman he knew in Hagerstown, Maryland on June 30, 2015. Roger Largent was arrested on July 8, 2015. Largent's prosecution was based on the testimony of M.F. that Largent was going to give her a ride in her car, and when arrived at her home he followed her into her kitchen and had sex with her while her back was to him. During Largent's trial Ashley Hall, an emergency room nurse, testified that she conducted an examination of M.F., and didn't find any indication of vaginal trauma, but she showed evidence of recently having had sex. Ashley was not testifying as an expert, and Largent's lawyer objected when the prosecutor asked Hall why someone who had non-consensual sex wouldn't show any signs of trauma. Largent's defense was that M.F. came on to him and the sex was consensual, and the first officer who took M.F.'s statement testified he did not notice any marks or bruising on M.F. After his conviction by a jury, Largent was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Largent appealed. On February 11, 2017 Largent was beaten to death in at Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland. Four days later, on February 15, 2017 the Maryland Court of Special Appeals posthumously reversed Largent's conviction on the basis Hall's testimony was inadmissible because she was a lay witness who provided expert testimony."
