Summary of Case:

"Terry Laverty was wrongly convicted in 1971 of riotous behavior in Belfast, Northern Ireland after his brother was among 10 people shot dead by a British parachute regiment during an operation in the city’s Ballymurphy district on August 11, 1971. The sole evidence against Laverty was by a paratrooper who claimed he had memorised the faces of rioters. Laverty was sentenced to six months in prison. With the aid of the Criminal Case Review Commission Laverty obtained the new evidence that the soldier who identified him signed the witness statement used to prosecute Laverty without reading its contents. Based on that new evidence Laverty filed an appeal to quash his conviction. On February 10, 2015 a Belfast County Court judge granted Laverty's appeal after the Crown Prosecution Service announced it would not oppose his appeal."
