Summary of Case:	"Amina Lawal was wrongly convicted in March 2002 of adultery for having a child out of wedlock and sentenced to death by stoning. There was world-wide condemnation of her conviction and sentence. Her conviction was overturned by a Nigerian court on September 24, 2003 that cited procedural errors and ruled she was not given "ample opportunity to defend herself." That ruling was appealed, and the overturning of her conviction was affirmed on February 19, 2004 by the Sharia Court of Appeal, on the basis that she was already pregnant when the adultery law became effective and it wasn't retroactive. Lawal was released after 23 months awaiting her execution."
