Summary of Case:

"Pierre Le Guennec and his wife Danielle Le Guennec were codefendants wrongly convicted in 2015 of possession of stolen goods in Mougins, France. Pierre was an electrician and friend of Picasso. The prosecution of Pierre and Danielle was based on their possession of 271 unsigned Picasso drawings that they had stored in more than two dozen garbage bags in their garage since Picasso's widow Jacqueline Roque asked him to store them for her after Picasso died in 1973. Jacqueline died in 1986. In 2010 Pierre sought to have the works authenticated by Picasso's son Claude Ruiz-Picasso. Claude had no knowledge the 271 artworks existed, and filed a police complaint against the Le Guennec's. After their conviction Pierre and Danielle were each sentenced to two years in prison. Their convictions and sentences were affirmed in 2016 but the Cour de Cassation. They appealed. On February 28, 2018 France's highest appeals court overturned their convictions, ruling that the prosecution introduced insufficient evidence that "the goods held by the suspects had been stolen." The value of the 271 artworks has not been assessed, but it includes drawings of women and horses, nine rare Cubist collages from the time Picasso was working with fellow French artist Georges Braque and a work from his famous "blue period." At the time of the court's ruling Pierre was in his late 70s."
