Summary of Case:

"Jason Lester was wrongly convicted in 2016 of the false imprisonment of politician Joan Burton and her advisor Karen O'Connell in a police car for three hours during a protest in Tallaght, Ireland in November 2014. Tallaght is about two miles southwest of Dublin. Lester was 15 at the time of his arrest. Lester's defense was he had a right to publicly protest, and that the protesters had made an agreement with the gardai (police) that they would march ahead of a car carrying Burton and O'Connell. The prosecution's case was based on the testimony of Burton and O'Connell that they were too frightened to get out of Garda (police) cars surrounded by people shouting abuse, throwing missiles and banging on windows. After his conviction following a bench trial in Dublin's Children's Court -- because Lester was a minor at the time of his arrest -- Judge John King sentenced Lester to 9 months in prison suspended for 9 months of good behaior on probation. Lester appealed. On December 4, 2017 Lester's conviction was overturned based on the prosecution's failure to introduce evidence that Lester had in fact caused them to be imprisoned in the police car."
