Summary of Case:

"Per Kristian Liland was wrongly convicted of murdering two friends. The men's bodies were found on December 24, 1969 in the Norwegian town Fredrikstad. Per Kristian Liland was convicted in 1970 of committing both murders, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 10 years of post-release supervision. Liland was released from prison in 1984, and was then supervised for 10 years. After he was released from serving his sentence Liland was eoxnerated on October 26, 1994 when the prosecution agreed to dismiss the charges based on new evidence unconvered by journalist and private investigator Tore Sandberg. Per Liland's case is a notorious Norwegian miscarriage of justice that is known as The Liland Affair. Sandberg was later instrumental in the exoneration of Fritz Moen for two murders committed in 1976 and 1977. Liland was awarded a total of 13.74 million Norwegian Kroners as compensation. (In January 2000 the exchange rate was 0.125 Kroners to US$, so at that time the award equaled about $1.7 million."
