"Lara Ling and Euna Lee were co-defendants arrested and convicted in March 2009 of illegally entering North Korea. The two American citizens were journalists obtaining information about North Korea when they crossed the border between China and North Korea. They were sentenced to 12 years in prison at hard labor. On August 4, 2009 former President William (Bill) Clinton travelled to North Korea and met with Premier Kim Jong-il. After the meeting North Korean officials announced that Kim Jong-il had issued a special pardon of the two women on "humanitarian" grounds."
