Summary of Case:

"Bruce Lisker was wrongly convicted in Los Angeles County in 1985 of murdering his mother in 1983 when he was 17-years-old. Tried as an adult, Bruce Lisker was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison. His state appeals were denied, but he did not file a federal habeas petition. In 2003 Lisker filed a state habeas corpus petition based on new evidence of his innocence. After it was denied he filed a petition in federal court in 2004. After 5-1/2 years of procedural manuevering, US District Court Judge Virginia A. Phillips granted Lisker's petition on August 6, 2009. Lisker was released on bond on August 13, 2009 after 26 years, 5 months and 4 days of incarceration from the time of his 1983 arrest. The charges were dismissed on September 21, 2009, after the Los Angeles County District Attorney declined to retry him. Lisker filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles and police officers involved in his prosecution. In January 2016 Los Angeles agreed to settle the lawsuit for $7.6 million. Bruce Lisker was represented in his civil suit by the New York City lawfirm of Neufeld Scheck & Brustin, LLP. Two of the partners in NS&B are Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld, co-founders of the non-profit Innocence Project in New York."
