Summary of Case:

"Huang Liyi was wrongly convicted in 1999 of check fraud in China. He was sentenced to life in prison. He was acquitted on July 19, 2010 after new evidence was discovered. On October 29, 2012 he received compensation from the Chinese government of $131,432 (825,000 yuan at exchange rate of 6.277 per $1) for loss of freedom, and emotional and psychological distress. It was reported to be the largest compensation awarded to date by the Chinese government for a wrongful conviction. $106,084 (665,889 yuan) of the award was for personal loss of freedom at the rate of 162.65 yuan ($26) for each of the 4,094 days he was imprisoned based on the average daily wage for urban workers in the non-private sector. The remaining award of $25,348 (159,111 yuan) was for emotional and psychological distress. It was reportedly the first time an exonerated person in China was awarded compensation for emotional and psychological distress."
