Summary of Case:

"Camilo Lopez (aka Carlos Camilo Lopez) was wrongly convicted in 1985 of a murder committed in Kings County, New York in 1984. Lopez' conviction was based on the confession of his co-defendant and one out of four eyewitesses who identified his co-defendant identified him. Lopez appealed arguing he was prejudicied by the trial judge's ruling denying his motion for severance so he could have a separate trial and the judge denying him the right to cross-examine his codefendant about his statement. The New York Supreme Court Appellate Division affirmed Lopez' conviction. On July 1, 1986 the New York Court of Appeal overturned Lopez' conviction and ordered a new trial because of the trial judge's failure to allow Lopez to cross-examine his codefendant violated his right of confrontation. In 1989 Lopez was found guilty of committing a murder in Ohio and he was imprisoned for 10 years before his conviction was overturned on appeal. In May 2007 Lopez was convicted in New Jersey of committing a murder in Hoboken on July 30, 1988. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison with a 30 year minimum before he was eligible for parole. In August 2010 Lopez' conviction and sentence were affirmed on appeal."
