"Joseph Majczek was codefendant of Theodore Marcinkiewicz. Majczek and Marcinkiewicz were wrongly convicted of murdering a policeman in Chicago based on the perjurious testimony of the prosecution's star eyewitness.. Joseph Majczek and Marcinkiewicz was sentenced to 99 years. Majczek's story was the subject of movie "Call Northside 777" (1948) starring Jimmy Stewart. The men were arrested in December 1932 and convicted in February 1933. Based on new evidence the prosecution's star witness lied, Majczek was granted an unconditional pardon by Illinois Governor Green in August 1945 and released from prison. Majczek was awarded $24,000 in compensation by the Illinois legislature for 12 years of wrongful imprisonment. Marcinkiewicz was released in 1950 when his writ of habeas corpus was granted.
