Summary of Case: |
"Samina Malik was wrongly convicted in December 2007 of storing material likely to be of use for terrorism. Malik, 24, was the first woman to be found guilty of violating Section 58 of the UK's Terrorism Act of 2000. She was sentenced to a 9 month suspended sentence. Describing herself as the 'lyrical terrorist' because of the poetry glorifying terrorism that she wrote on the back of some receipts at the shop where she worked, The 24-year-old Malik said she called herself the lyrical terrorist because she thought it sounded cool, and she denied she was an actual terrorist. After her conviction free speech activists in England described her crime as being one of thought crime. However, Section 58 only criminalizes actions intended to provide assistance or further terrorism, On June 17, 2008 the UK's Court of Appeal quashed her conviction on the basis that her writings and the documents in her possession did not constitute a violation of Section 58. She was ordered released from custody without a retrial. She was jailed for about six months prior to her trial." |
