Summary of Case: |
"Alvin Mansell was wrongly convicted of rape in 1925. Mansell, who was considered mentally retarded, was sentenced to death. After a year on death row, in 1926 North Carolina Governor Angus McLean commuted Mansell's sentence to life imprisonment based on new evidence by two physicans that Mansell didn't commit the crime, that the victim's initial description of her assailant was contradictory and didn't match Mansell, and alibi evidence that he couldn't have been at the crime scene. McLean may also have been influenced on a clemency petition signed by four thousand people. In 1930 N.C. Governor O. Max Gardner granted Mansell a full pardon and ordered his release based on his assessment that he was "absolutely convinced" Mansell was innocent." |
