Summary of Case:

"Mohammad Mansha was wrongly convicted in 2009 of committing blasphemy in September 2008 in the Bahawalnagar district in Punjab province in Pakistan. Mansha's prosecution was based on the allegation of the imam of a mosque that he had desecrated a copy of the Koran. After his conviction following a bench trial Mansha was sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2014 Mansha's conviction was affirmed on appeal. The same year Mansha appealed to Pakistan's Supreme Court. The prosecutor in the case, Abdul Waheed, admitted there was no "scientific evidence" against Mansha and the police investigation was "faulty," and that Mansha, a poor villager, could not hire a lawyer so the court appointed him one. On December 29, 2017 a two-judge panel of Pakistan's Supreme Court reversed Mansha's conviction on the basis the complainant, Akhtar Mohammad, was suffering from hearing and speech impairments. Justice Dost Mohammad and Justice Qazi Faez Isa ruled that Mohammad's evidence had no legal value under the Evidence Act."
