"Mikhail Marinich was wrongly convicted in 2004 of stealing 40 computers belonging to the U.S. Embassy in Minsk, Belarus. The U.S. Embassy officials denied that any computers had been stolen. Marinich was sentenced to 10 years in prison. After he was imprisoned his sentence was reduced to 3-1/2 years. In 2005 his sentence was reduced by one year under the amnesty for the sixtieth anniversary of the victory in World War II. In 2006 Marinich filed a petition with the United Nation's Human Rights Committee. In 2010 the HRC issued its ruling that Marinich's trial judge was biased and his presumption of innocence was violated. The HRC's ruling stated Marinich was entitled to compensation."
