Summary of Case:

"William Jackson Marion was wrongly convicted of murder twice. After his first conviction in 1884 the Nebraska Supreme Court ordered a new trial because the judge, and not the jury, sentenced Marion to death. After Marion's retrial he was again convicted, and sentenced to death by a jury. He was hanged on March 25, 1887, proclaiming his innocence. Four years after his execution the "victim," John Cameron, turned up alive. He said he went to Mexico in 1872 to avoid a shotgun wedding. Marion's grandson Elbert Marion headed a campaign for the pardoning of his grandfather, and Nebraska Governor Bob Kerry posthumously pardoned William Marion on the 100th centennial of his execution, March 25, 1987."
