Summary of Case:

"Shafqat Emmanuel and his wife, Shagufta Kausar, were wrongly convicted in 2014 of blasphemy for allegedly sending derogatory remarks about the Muslim prophet Mohammed in a text message to another man, Khalid Maqsood. After their conviction in the central Pakistan town of Toba Tek Singh, the couple were sentenced to death. On June 3, 2021 the Lahore High Court acquitted the couple on the basis the prosecution had not presented sufficient evidence to prove their guilt. A week after the verdict the couple had not yet been released, but their lawyer said that Muslims in Pakistan were advocating for the Christian couple to be killed upon their release."
