"Mahmood Hussein Mattan was a Somali sailor wrongly convicted on July 24, 1952 of the March 6, 1952 murder of a woman. His appeal was denied on August 19, 1952, and he was hanged in Cardiff jail two weeks later - less than 6 weeks after his conviction. 46 years after his execution his conviction was quashed by England's Court of Appeals on February 28, 1998. Mahmood Hussein Mattan was the first person in Britain to have their conviction posthumously quashed after being executed. Mattan's family was awarded compensation of 700,000 pounds."
