Summary of Case:

"Mark Maxson was wrongly convicted on March 24, 1994 of murdering six-year-old Lindsey Murdock in Chicago, Illinois on August 29, 1992. Maxson's prosecution was based on his confession that he didn't sign, and recanted as false. After his conviction by a jury Maxson was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Post-conviction DNA testing excluded Maxson as Lindsey's assailant. The Cook County State's Attorney filed a motion to dismiss the charges against Maxson based on the new exclusionary DNA evidence. On September 27, 2016 the motion was granted and Maxson was released 24 years and 1 month in custody. On October 27, 2016 a Cook County judge granted Maxon's application for a Certificate of Innocence, which will enable Maxson to seek up to $199,150 in compensation from the State of Illinois. Maxson's lawyers can petition for a maximum of 25% of Maxson's award."
