Summary of Case:

"Scott Alan May was wrongly convicted in 2008 of a murder in Sydney, Australia in May 2003. May was sentenced to 36 years in prison with the requirment he serve a minimum of 27 years. On May 31, 2012 the New South Wales Court of Appeals quashed May's conviction and acquitted him based on their finding the testimony of the prosecution's key witness, Ryan Barry Burnes, was wholly unreliable and provided "incredible" testimony, and there was a significant possibility May was innocent. Justice Carolyn Simpson wrote in her ruling, "It is quite apparent that he was seriously psychiatrically unstable. For that reason alone, it would be difficult to place reliance on his evidence in a conviction for murder." Justice Ian Harrison agreed that Burnes "emerges as a wholly incredible and unreliable witness.""
