Summary of Case:

"Arvin Carsell McGee was wrongly convicted in 1989 and sentenced to 365 years in prison for the 1987 kidnapping and rape of a twenty-year-old woman in the Tulsa, Oklahoma. The victim was tied up and locked in the restroom of the laundry where she worked. When the attacker returned he drove her to a secluded area where he raped her. Arvin McGee was convicted after three trials. DNA testing excluded him as the woman's attacker and he was freed in Feb. 2002. In Sept. 2002 it was disclosed by OK authorities that the DNA tests had implicated a man then imprisoned in an Oklahoma prison. Arvin McGee filed a federal civil rights lawsuit alleging investigating officers had acted with "deliberate indifference" to his rights. On March 29, 2006 Arvin was awarded damages of $14.5 million by a federal court jury against the city of Tulsa. Tulsa appealed, and in June 2006 a settlement was agreed to whereby the city would pay McGee $12.25 million -- $6.125 million within 60 days of June 1, 2006, and the remaining $6.125 million by June 1, 2007."
