Summary of Case:

"Thomas McGowan was wrongly convicted on December 4, 1985 of a May 1985 burglary (committed during a rape) in Dallas County, Texas, based on the victim's identification. After his 1985 conviction for burglary he was sentenced to life in prison. In 1986 he was prosecuted for raping the woman in her apartment, and after his conviction for that crime he was given a second life sentence. In 2008 DNA testing unavailable at the time of his trial excluded him as the woman's assailant and he was released in April 2008 after 23 years of wrongful imprisonment. Officially exonerated by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on June 11, 2008. It was announced on June 17, 2008 that the DNA matched a man imprisoned on another charge, and when confronted, Kenneth Woodson admitted to the crime, but the five-year statute of limitations had expired so he wouldn't be charged. As of 2012, McGowan had been paid $2,051,995 in compensation by the State of Texas."
