Summary of Case: |
"Deondray McKoy was wrongly convicted on November 8, 2013 attempted murder in the shoting of a man in Belize on June 23, 2009. McKoy was convicted based on the eyewitness testimony of a witness who admitted he couldn't positively identify McKoy because he didn't see the face of the shooter. McKoy presented an alibi defense that he wasn't at the crime scene. After McKoy's conviction by a jury's 8 to 1 vote, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison. In June 2015 the Belize Court of Appeals reversed McKoy's conviction and ordered his acquittal based on the prosecution's introduction of insufficient evidence to prove him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. McKoy was released, after 23 months in custody from the time of his arrest in July 2013." |
