Summary of Case:

"Stuart McLachlan was wrongly convicted in January 2014 of assaulting a shopkeeper in Hastings, New Zealand over a Lotto ticket. The prosecution's case was based on the allegation that on March 9, 2013 McLachlan went into a Havelock North Lotto shop and tried to buy a Lotto ticket, but he was $1.20 short. The prosecution alleged that he refused to give the ticket back and when the shopkeeper tried to stop him from leaving the store there was a scuffle during which McLachlan allegedly shoved the ticket down the front of the woman's shirt. McLachlan was convicted after a bench trial and sentenced to pay $98 reparations and the shopkeepers medical expenses. McLachlan appealed. On October 22, 2014 Justice Mary Peters of the High Court at Napier quashed McLachlan's conviction and discharged him without a retrial."
