Summary of Case:	"Wrongly convicted in January 1993 of assaulting one of his rental tenants. Sentenced to four years imprisonment. Conviction quashed in May 1993 by the Court of Appeals based on new evidence that two other men had actually committed the assault. McLoughlin sued his lawyers for failing to advertise for eyewitnesses in the Manchester Evening News prior to his trial. In July 2005, England's High Court ruled that McLoughlin had not instructed his lawyers to advertise for witnesses until after he was convicted. The High Court also ruled McLoughlin had to pay his former law firm's legal expenses in defending against his lawsuit. In July 2006 England's Court of Appeal upheld the High Court ruling. The total of McLoughlin's legal expenses and those of his former law firm were approximately 1 million pounds (about $1.8 million). In a July 2006 invertiew, McLoughlin said he had paid about 700,000 pounds of the legal fees. McLoughlin was wrongly imprisoned for about five months in 1993, and was not awarded any compensation."
