Summary of Case:

"Angeline McMahon was wrongly convicted of obstruction of justice for allegedly helping her son avoid arrest after he was sought by the police for a December 2006 over a fight involving a lifeguard at Ocean Beach, Whangarei, New Zealand. Angeline McMahon was arrested on March 23, 2007, and her son was arrested six weeks later. McMahon was tried in March 2009. The prosecution alleged that she enrolled her son Brandon McMahon at the Vipassana Meditation Centre near Helensville, north of Auckland, under a false name to avoid arrest. The jury found her guilty of attempting to wilfully obstruct the course of justice. She was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment. On October 20, 2009 New Zealand's Court of Appeal quashed her conviction and did not order her retrial. She was released after seven months imprisonment."
