Summary of Case:

"Charles McMenamin (aka Charlie McMenamin) was wrongly convicted in 1980 of belonging to a proscribed organisation (x2), having a firearm with intent (x2), conspiracy to murder, possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent, possession of a firearm, collecting unlawful information, and communicating unlawful information. The charges were related to a conspiracy to kill British soldiers in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1978 when McMenamin was 16 years old. McMenamin's conviction was based on his confession that he recanted as coerced by police torture. He served 3 years in prison before his release in 1983. McMenamin filed an application for review of his conviction with the Criminal Case Review Commission. The CCRC's investigation discovered new evidence of his innocence, and that his confession had been beaten out of him. His case was referred by the CCRC on August 22, 2006. On June 19, 2007 the Belfast Court of Appeal quashed his conviction based on evidence that his confession was involuntary and that on the day he was alleged to have been involved in the gun attack, McMenamin was in a juvenile training centre after running away from home."
