Summary of Case:

"Pat Metegrano was wrongly convicted in October 1942 of being one of two men who robbed two taverns in Chicago, Illinois on January 9, 1942. Metegrano's conviction was based on his identification by two eyewitnesses. Metegrano waived a jury trial. Although the other robber who had already been convicted and testified that he had never seen Metegrano before his arrest for the robberies, the judge found Metegrano guilty and sentenced him to one year to life in prison. Two months after Metegrano's conviction the second robber was arrested and confessed. Metegrano was mistaken for him although he was a light skinned blond while Metegrano was dark complexioned. Based on the new evidence of his innocence Metegrano filed a motion for a new trial. The motion was granted, the charges were subsequently dismissed, and Metegrano was released after ten months incarceration."
