"Rev. Max Josef Metzger was sentenced to death for treason on October 14, 1943, by Roland Freisler, chief judge of the Nazi's People's Court. He had been arrested in June 1943 after writing a letter to the British government denouncing the Nazis and called for a German state based on Christian democratic and legal principles.
