Summary of Case: |
"Cornell Miller was wrongly convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2014 for the death of a man in Scott County, Iowa on September 11, 2013. Miller sold three doses of heroin to Dan Hansen and his girlfriend Trisha Delong. Hansen died after Delong injected him with a dose of heroin. Miller was charged and convicted by a jury of involuntary manslaughter in Hansen's death. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison. On August 19, 2015 the Iowa Court of Appeals reversed by a 2-1 vote, ruling that the State failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the essential element of involuntary manslaughter that he acted "recklessly." The appeals court ordered dismissal of his involuntary manslaughter charge." |
