Summary of Case: |
"Robert Lee Miller Jr. was wrongly convicted on May 19, 1988 of the 1987 rape and murder of two elderly women in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on September 3, 1986. Robert Miller falsely confessed after an 8-1/2 hour interrogation. Robert Lee Miller's statement had 112 inconsistencies, and he was delusional, telling investigators that he was the Lone Ranger and an Indian warrior, and that his family had visionary powers. Miller was convicted based on his confession and the testimony of forensic technician Joyce Gilchrist. Miller was sentenced to death. In 1995 DNA tests unavailable at the time of his trial excluded him as the woman's assailant, while identifying convicted rapist Ronald Lott as the perpetrator. Prosecutors opposed vacating Miller's conviction, and he wasn't released from prison on bail until January 22, 1998 after ten years on Oklahoma's Death Row. Miller's prosecutor later became a state judge. Miller was one of four people exonerated as of November 2014 whose convictions were based on the expert testimony of Joyce Gilchrist. Lott was charged and convicted of the murders Miller had been convicted of committing." |
