Summary of Case:

"Beverly Monroe was wrongly convicted on Nov. 22, 1992 of murdering her boyfriend of 12 years, who was found on the couch of his living room on March 5, 1992 with a bullet through his forehead in what was at first considered a suicide. Released from prison on April 5, 2002, after her conviction was overturned by Federal Judge Richard Williams who granted her writ of habeas corpus. In spite of her conviction being overturned, Beverly was quoted as saying: "My faith in the justice system has been completely shattered." Her daughter, a lawyer, said: "It's not just one police investigator that is flawed. It's the whole system. The whole system is flawed ... It's hard to believe that this kind of thing is allowed to continue. It's hard to believe that the state has a right to do this to someone.""

Conviction Caused By:

"Prosecutorial misconduct and police misconduct. In vacating Beverly Monroe's conviction on March 28, 2002, Judge Richard Williams called her case a "monument to prosecutorial indiscretions and mishandling." The prosecution's case was openly criticized for the "manipulative tactics" used in the police interviews as well as its overall weaknesses, particularly in the field of forensics."
