Summary of Case: |
"Bernard Murphy and his codefendant John Brannan were wrongfully convicted in February 1992 of murdering Michael Pollitt during an altercation in a Manchester, England nightclub in June 1991. Both men were sentenced to life in prison. Murphy and Brannan were denied leave to appeal in 1993. John Brannan was 36 when he committed suicide in December 1998 at Blundeston Prison in Suffolk. Based on new evidence that Murphy and Brannan acted in self-defense against Pollitt who had a gun, the Criminal Case Review Commission referred their case to the Court of Appeals. On January 25, 2002 the Court of Appeals quashed the conviction of Murphy and posthumously Brannan, based on the new self-defense evidence. Murphy was released following the Court's ruling, and he told reporters, "I am just sorry that my friend John Brannan isn't here with me to hear his name cleared."" |
