Summary of Case:

"Colm Murphy was wrongly convicted on January 22, 2002 of conspiracy to cause an explosion by lending mobile phones to the gang who planted the car bomb in Omagh, Northern Ireland that killed 29 people on August 15, 1998, knowing they would be used in the bombing operation. After his conviction following a non-jury trial in the Dublin special criminal court, Murphy was sentenced to 14 years in prison. On January 20, 2005 the Court of Appeals for Northern Ireland quashed Murphy's conviction on two grounds: the trial judge mishandled evidence from two Irish detectives who were accused of illegally amending their interrogation notes, and the judge made references to Murphy's previous convictions -- which amounted to an "invasion of the presumption of innocence." Murphy was released on £83,500 bail pending his retrial. Murphy was acquitted on February 24, 2010 after a non-jury retrial. After his acquittal, Murphy told reporters, "I am glad to see it's all over." Murphy was the only person convicted of charges related to the bombing."
