Summary of Case:

"Mike Murphy was wrongly convicted of a July 2004 incident involving the firing of a shotgun damaged two cars near the Two Brewers pub in Croydon, England. Murphy claimed he was nowhere near the pub and he was the victim of mistaken identity and police perjury. After his conviction by a jury Murphy was sentenced to five years in prison. While imprisoned Murphy studied legal books in the prison library and discovered that the judge erred by allowing the prosecution to present testimony about Murphy's unrelated conviction for possessing a firearm that occured more than 20 years earlier. Murphy's application for leave to appeal was accepted. Murphy's conviction was overturned on appeal because the judge improperly allowed the prosecutor to tell the jury about an unrelated 20 year-old conviction. Murphy was released on bond pending his retrial after 10 months of imprisonment. Murphy was retried and acquitted of the charges on July 7, 2007. After his acquittal Murphy told reporters: "Justice at last. When I read up the law in jail I could see straight away something was wrong. The first jury should never have been told of that conviction. It had nothing to do with what I was facing.""
