Summary of Case: |
"Omar Nakhcha was one of five codefendants wrongly convicted in 2010 of terrorism charges in Spain for allegedly recruiting fighters for the Iraqi insurgency. The five co-defendants were convicted based on the confession by one man. After being arrested in 2006 in Vilanova i la Geltru the five men said they were humiliated, insulted and threatened. They were sentenced in January 2011 to up to 9 years in prison. On March 3, 2011 Spain's Supreme Court overturned the convictions based on insufficient evidence, and ruled there are doubts that the confession relied on to convict the men was obtained "freely and voluntarily."" |
