"Satya Nand was wrongly convicted of an alleged May 2002 assault. Satya Nand is a policeman, and the alleged victim claimed that Nand hit him several times with a baseball bat when he was being questioned at Fiji's Nasese Police Station as a suspect in a computer theft. Nand was given a suspended sentence and fined $100. Nand's conviction was quashed on appeal based on the fact that numerous witnesses in the police station said they saw nothing, and he said nothing to the judge when he was later granted bail. the appeals court also noted that the trial court had shifted the burden of proof to Nand."
