Summary of Case:

"Alprentiss Nash was wrongly convicted in 1997 of murder, robbery, and burglary committed on April 30, 1995 in Chicago, Illinois. Nash was sentenced to 80 years in prison. Post-conviction DNA testing of skin cells recovered from a ski mask worn by the perpetrator excluded Nash. Based on that new evidence Nash filed a petition for a new trial that was granted. The Cook County State's Attorney's motion to dismiss the charges was granted, and Nash was released on August 30, 2012. Nash was fatally shot on a Chicago sidewalk on July 28, 2015, while Nash was attempting to rob a man with whom he had a long drug history. In November 2015 the robbery victim, Paul Vukadinovic, pled guilty to unlawful use of a weapon and was sentenced to two years in prison. Nash was awarded $200,000 in wrongful imprisonment compensation by the State of Illinois in 2013. Nash filed a federal civil rights lawsuit in August 2013 that named the City of Chicago and eight Chicago Police Department officers as defendants. Nash's estate settled the lawsuit in September 2016 for $350,000."
