Summary of Case:

"Naik Pratap was wrongly convicted of murder in 1989 when he was 13 years old. Naik Pratap was sentenced to life in prison. His conviction was quashed in October 1994 by the Orissa High Court, which ordered his acquittal. However, the acquittal order wasn't transmitted to the District Court, so no order for his release was issued. In January 2003 Naik Pratap was finally released, 8 years and 3 months after his acquittal. On August 20, 2007 the Orissa High Court ordered the payment of Rs 8 lakh (800,000 rupees or $19,484, at Aug 20, 2007 exchange rate.), as compensation for Pratap's many years of false imprisonment.
