"James Newsome was wrongly convicted of murdering a grocery store owner during a holdup. He was framed for the murder by two Chicago detectives who coached eyewitnesses to select James Newsome from a line-up. Newsome was sentenced to life in prison. He was exonerated when after fifteen years crime scene fingerprints were matched to an man imprisoned for another crime. Newsome was released from prison in January 1995, and in July 1995 he was granted a full pardon by Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar. In October 2001 James Newsome was awarded $15 million by a jury, $1 million for each year he was wrongly imprisoned. Newsome was also awarded $140,000 in compensation by the State of Illinois."
