Summary of Case:

"Bala Ngilari was wrongly convicted of public corruption for financial fraud on March 6, 2017 in Yola, Nigeria. Ngilari prosecution was based on the purchase of 25 vehicles at a cost of N169 million when he was the governor of Nigeria's Adamawa State, that allegedly did not adhere to the procurement laws of the state. Ngilari was jointly tried with two codefendants -- the former Secretary to the State Government, and the Commissioner of Finance -- who were acquitted. After finding Ngilari guilty of four charges -- but acquitting him of conspiracy -- Justice Nathan Musa sentenced Ngilari to five years in prison without the option of paying a fine to avoid serving the sentence. On June 20, 2017 the Yola Division of the Court of Appeal ordered Ngilari's acquittal based on lack of merit of the prosecution's case and insufficient proof of the charges. After Ngilari's acquittal his lawyer, Obed Wadzani told reporters that the charges did not state what specific offense he committed. Ngilari had spent only a few weeks in jail after his conviction before his release on bail."
